willow basket weaver
Basket weaving is one of the oldest traditional crafts in Scotland. The skill developed through the need for containers to carry things both indoors and out, everything from baskets to collect peat and fishing tools to containers for use in the home. As with many of the crafts that are no longer practised by necessity, they have developed into an artform. Hazel Irvine-Fortescue is a basket weaver in Aberdeenshire who produces beautiful baskets, both practical and ornamental, from willow, birch and, more recently, rhodedendron branches.
